Opinion: Eliminate deadlines to help Indian students
Tuesday, November 11, 2003

"When Indian students move to a college town, they move from an environment of 60 to 80 percent unemployment and with virtually no funds for their first month's rent, deposits, hookup and other basic necessities. They are trying to move away from generations of poverty, only to be told, "You did not meet a deadline and you will live below poverty guidelines while in college."

I am encouraging the state's college and university presidents and the members of the state board to do away with deadlines for federal funds. The deadline is being moved to an earlier date for academic year 2004-2005. What will this accomplish? The packaging process does not begin until June."
