Navy returns sacred island to state of Hawaii
Wednesday, November 12, 2003

The U.S. Navy returned control of the island of Kahoolawe to the state of Hawaii on Tuesday.

Native Hawaiians consider Kahoolawe to be sacred. They have been working on plans to restore and protect the land, which had been under military control since the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

A formal changeover ceremony is being held today.
