Va. tribe receives donations to pay for land
Wednesday, November 12, 2003

The Eastern Division Chickahominy Tribe of Virginia has been bombarded with donations after word spread that the tribe could lose the only land it owns.

The tribe was having trouble making the monthly payment of $1,471.90 for 41 acres of land. The tribe plans to use the land for a cultural center, an outdoor pavilion, a walking trail and a pond.

The tribe is state recognized. The Senate Indian Affairs Committee has advanced a bill that would grant federal recognition to the tribe and five other Virginia tribes.
