Mont. tribes kick start meat processing plant
Friday, November 14, 2003

The tribes on the Fort Belknap Reservation in Montana just opened a meat processing plant with the goal of becoming one of the top bison processing centers in the country.

The Assiniboine and Gros Ventre Tribes bought the Little Rockies Meat Packing Company for $50,000 at a bank foreclosure. Through financing from the Native American National Bank, the tribe upgraded the facility and got it up and running. The plant currently employs six but staff is expected to double in size next year.

The tribes are working with the InterTribal Bison Cooperative (ITBC) to market bison products. ITBC is trying to secure $500,000 from Congress to promote tribal bison herds.
