Supreme Court won't hear affirmative action case
Tuesday, November 18, 2003

The Supreme Court on Monday refused to consider an affirmative action case affecting government preferences for minority-owned companies.

By a 7-2 vote, the justices let stand a decision from the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals. The move allows the city of Denver to award contracts for minority companies.

Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist and Justices Antonin Scalia dissented. In a written explanation, Scalia said race-based preferences are wrong.
