Former state Sen. Kelly Haney, a member of the Seminole Nation, received the 2003 Oklahoma Spirit Award on Monday.

Haney was honored for his contributions to the state and to American Indian culture and heritage. An internationally-recognized artist, he served 22 years in the state legislature and created the bronze Indian statue that sits atop the state Capitol dome.

Haney beat out other prominent Oklahoma Indians like Former Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Wilma Mankiller and Indian Health Service Director Dr. Charles Grim.
