Democrats, McCain, consider energy filibuster
Wednesday, November 19, 2003

Senate Democrats were considering a filibuster of the 1,110-page national energy policy bill as the House voted 246 to 180, largely along party lines, to approve the measure.

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said he would support a filibuster. He and other Democrats say it is loaded with provisions for special interests that would not benefit the public.

The bill includes provisions to streamline energy development on Indian lands by limiting the Department of Interior's involvement. Subject to certain conditions, the bill would waive the government's liability for those tribes who voluntarily enter into tribal energy resource agreements.

The text of the conference report for the bill can be found at http://energy.senate.gov/legislation/energybill2003/energybill2003.cfm
