San Pasqual chairman accused of conflict of interest
Friday, November 21, 2003

The chairman of the San Pasqual Band of Mission Indians in California is at the center of conflict of interest charges.

Allen E. Lawson Jr. works for the tribe and a construction company doing business with the tribe. The connections led Jim Thorpe, a tribal member who ran the housing program, to ask the tribe's attorney and the Department of Housing and Urban Development, for advice.

The attorney and HUD said the chairman should remove himself from decisions regarding the company. But the chairman fired Thorpe last week, who contends the action was politically motivated. Thorpe is now drafting a petition to recall Lawson and he intends to run for chairman.
