Campbell received hate mail over immigrant bill
Friday, November 21, 2003

Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colo.) says he received a lot of flak for a bill that would have extended American citizenship to a Mexican teenager and his family.

"I got more hate mail than you can imagine," he told The Denver Post. "It's like abortion or guns or gay marriage. People are driven by ideological belief and there is practically no room for dialogue."

Campbell defended 18-year-old Jesus Apodaca, who was threatened with deportation because he entered the U.S. illegally. His citizenship bill died and he has not re-introduced it. He has since dropped his sponsorship of a separate bill to help illegal immigrants attend college.
