Calif. tribe may shut down tire recycling plant
Monday, December 1, 2003

After four years of operation, the Cabazon Band of Mission Indians may shut down its tire-recycling plant.

At first business was good for First Nation Recovery Inc. The tribe was paid $20 a ton to take old tires, which it then recycled into rubber and sold. The Firestone recall of 2000 meant a steady stream of revenue.

But the tribe and others in California blame Canada, which subsidizes recyclers, and a glut on the rubber market for dropping prices. The tribe only gets 10 cents a pound for crumb rubber, but says it needs 15 cents to turn a profit.
