Water users on Mont. reservations air complaints
Tuesday, December 2, 2003

Sen. Conrad Burns (R-Mont.) and Rep Denny Rehberg (R-Mont.) held a meeting on Monday to address concerns of water users on four reservations in Montana.

Water districts representing Indians and non-Indians blame the Bureau of Indian Affairs on a series of snafus and mixups. At one point, one district was denied their water for almost two months.

BIA officials attributed the delays to administrative problems and lack of resources. They acknowledged a lack of capital improvements to water systems, but said low water rates have not kept up with costs of maintaining the system. They said they don't want to assess higher fees on water users.
