Election for S.D. House seat to be held June 1
Tuesday, December 9, 2003

Bill Janklow (R) is resigning from the U.S. House of Representatives effective January 24, but the special election for his replacement won't be held until June 1, The Sioux Falls Argus Leader reports.

Democrat Stephanie Herseth announced before the trial that she would run for the seat. She lost 54-45 percent to Janklow in November 2002.

Terry Begay (http://www.terry4congress.com), who is Navajo and Sioux, also ran in that race but did not garner significant support. He is with the Libertarian party.

Some Republicans hope Thune, who held the seat, will run. He lost to Sen. Tim Johnson (D-S.D.) in November 2002. Indian voters carried Johnson to victory.
