HUD Secretary Mel Martinez resigns post
Wednesday, December 10, 2003

Housing and Urban Development Mel R. Martinez announced on Tuesday he was leaving his Cabinet post. His resignation is effective Friday.

During the Bush administration, HUD made some policy changes affecting Indian Country. One makes it easier for tribes to move forward with housing developments when local governments object. Another recognizes tribal authority to set wages on housing projects. Finally, a ban on using volunteers for self-help housing projects was lifted.

Martinez is said to be interested in running for U.S. Senate. He would replace retiring Sen. Bob Graham (D).

Michael Liu still remains the assistant secretary for public and Indian housing at HUD.
