S.D. tribe hopes to capitalize on Lewis-Clark
Friday, December 12, 2003

The Yankton Sioux Tribe of South Dakota is hoping the bicentennial commemoration of the Lewis and Clark expedition will be an economic boon to the reservation.

Robert Cournoyer, president of the Yankton Sioux Tribal Tourism Association and the Alliance of Tribal Tourism Advocates (ATTA), wants to coordinate events with local communities. He's inviting 30 to 40 mayors to take part in a planning meeting December 30.

As part of the commemoration, the ATTA is coordinating the "Oceti Sakowin (Seven Council Fires) Experience," a signature event for South Dakota. The ATTA is also planning an entire month of events, from August 27 to September 26, 2004.

Some of the events include the Yankton Sioux Tribe's traditional wacipi on August 6-8, 2004 and a festival on August 27-28.
