BIA reaffirms result of Meskwaki Tribe's election
Friday, December 19, 2003

The Bureau of Indian Affairs on Thursday said it upheld the results of the latest Meskwaki Tribe's elections, paving the way for the reopening of the tribe's casino in Iowa.

The casino was closed in May due to a dispute over the tribe's leadership. The BIA now recognizes Homer Bear Jr. as the rightfully elected chairman Bear and his council hope to open the casino early next year.

Meanwhile, Bear has filed a lawsuit against a bank he says is withholding funds from the tribe's bank account. The tribe wants actual and punitive damages.
