Miccosukee Tribe sees homeland slowly polluted

Since 1957, water managers in Florida have been pumping dirty water into the Everglades, the Miccosukee Tribe's homeland. The tribe wants it to stop.

But the tribe will have to convince the U.S. Supreme Court first. In a case that is being watched nationwide, the justices will hear a dispute between the tribe and the South Florida Water Management District, which operates the water pump. Oral arguments take place tomorrow morning.

The tribe says the pollution is destroying wildlife in the Everglades. Backed by environmentalists, the tribe wants the water district to comply with the federal Clean Water Act.

The district is resisting, saying it is not actually creating any new pollution. Some water managers in other states fear a decision will be costly.
