Miccosukee Tribe's case draws national attention

Six years ago, the Miccosukee Tribe of Florida filed a lawsuit to stop the pollution of its homelands. Today, the suit goes before the U.S. Supreme Court in a case that has drawn national attention.

The tribe's supporters include environmentalists and several Eastern and Midwestern states. They are calling on the court to affirm the reach of the federal Clean Water Act. The tribe says a pump that moves polluted water into the Everglades should be subject to the law.

On the other side is the South Florida Water Management District, which operates the pump, and several Western states. They fear stringent regulation of water systems that they believe shouldn't be qualified as polluters under the law.
