Former assistant secretary Kevin Gover is praising the Bureau of Indian Affairs for not caving into pressure from anti-recognition officials in Connecticut.

Twice, the BIA has recognized tribes in the state despite mounted opposition. The Eastern Pequot Tribal Nation was recognized in June 2002 while the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation was recognized last week.

Politicians from Connecticut have criticized the BIA's actions. But Gover says their concerns shouldn't force changes in the recognition process. He said lawmakers from the West won't allow reforms that some in Connecticut have sought.
