Tohono O'odham Nation to press for citizenship bill

The chairwoman of the Tohono O'odham Nation of Arizona said her tribe is strengthening the case for U.S. citizenship for all tribal members.

The tribe's reservation was split in two by the drawing of the U.S.-Mexico border. Those on the Mexico side and some on the U.S. side lack documentation to be able to cross freely to visit family, obtain medical services and participate in other activities.

Rep. Raúl Grijalva (D-Ariz.) is sponsoring the bill to grant all tribal members citizenship. But it didn't come up for a hearing last year. Neither did an earlier proposal.
