Conviction of Indian man for eagle feathers upheld
MONDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 2003

A federal appeals court on Friday upheld the conviction of a Native man who brought eagle feathers and parts into the United States from Canada.

Terry Antoine, a member of the Cowichan Salish First Nation in British Columbia, said his religious rights were violated by the conviction. A three-judge panel of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals disagreed.

Antoine said he was selling the parts to tribal members in the U.S. Authorities said he brought at least 120 bald and golden eagle carcasses from Canada.
