WEDNESDAY, MAY 15, 2002

Voters of the Seneca Nation on Monday narrowly approved a casino compact with the state of New York.

Less than half of the tribe's 4,500 eligible voters turned out for the special election. The tally was 1,077-976.

The compact allows the tribe to open three casinos, including two off-reservation. The 14-year agreement was negotiated with Gov. George Pataki (R).

The Bureau of Indian Affairs would have to approve the compact and take any land into trust as necessary.
