Pueblos want school buildings restored

FRIDAY, MAY 17, 2002

The Department of Interior is handing over a set of run-down school buildings to the 19 Pueblo tribes that own Santa Fe Indian School in New Mexico.

The department won't fix the buildings because it says they are beyond repair. Their age -- dating to the 1890s and the 1920s -- could lead to inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places.

The tribes don't have a plan to maintain or fix the buildings, a school administrator told The Santa Fe New Mexican.

The Bush administration is currently challenging whether it has a trust responsibility to repair dilapidated buildings. The Supreme Court will hear the case affecting the White Mountain Apache Tribe of New Mexico sometime later this year.
