Narragansett Tribe eyes change in law

TUESDAY, MAY 21, 2002

The Narragansett Tribe of Rhode Island still wants to repeal a provision in federal affecting its chances of gaming.

But the tribe will have to do it without the help of Rep. Patrick J. Kennedy (D-R.I.), a founder of the Congressional Native American Caucus. He has dropped legislation to repeal the so-called "Chafee amendment" in the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.

The amendment makes sure the tribe has to gain state approval for any gaming. It is named for the late former senator John H. Chafee.
