Senate panel subpoenas White House

THURSDAY, MAY 23, 2002

The Senate Governmental Affairs Committee voted along party lines on Wednesday to subpoena information from the White House regarding potential contacts with bankrupt company Enron.

Committee chairman Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman (D-Conn.) called the vote in response to what he called foot-dragging by White House counsel Alberto Gonzales. Gonzales was holding back information for weeks but finally began to release some data in response to the subpoena yesterday.

The information confirms that White House officials had numerous contacts with executives of the failed company in 2001. But Gonzales in a letter said no one asked for the Bush administration's assistance and none was offered.
