FRIDAY, MAY 24, 2002

The Pentagon has begun contacting Navy veterans who were exposed to chemical agents during the 1960s.

Known as Project Shipboard Hazard and Defense, or SHAD, sailors and ships were sprayed with live nerve and biological agents. The purpose was to test Navy response to the chemicals.

Six tests occurred in the Pacific Ocean from 1964 to 1968. Nerve agents, a biological toxin and simulants, one of which was determined to be dangerous, were used.
