Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has called for an investigation into Undersecretary of Energy Robert G. Card.

Reid wants to know if Card's actions affecting two of his former companies violate ethics guidelines and a criminal law. Card was an executive at both Kaiser-Hill and CH2M Hill, which have contracts to work with nuclear sites.

The sites include the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository in Nevada, which Reid opposes; and the Rocky Flats weapons factory in Colorado. Waste from Rocky Flats is being sent to South Carolina over the objections of Gov. Jim Hedges (D).

DOE officials called Reid's request, made to the Office of Government Ethics, desperate.
