Anyone who wishes to practice law in New Mexico will have to know about tribal sovereignty.

Starting next year, the state's bar exam will include a section on Indian law. The idea was proposed by a Navajo law student at the University of New Mexico.

The New Mexico Board of Bar Examiners unanimously recommended the proposal and it was approved by the state Supreme Court. New Mexico is the first state in the nation to test Indian law knowledge and may be followed by Montana.
