The Menominee Nation of Wisconsin will seek to take control of its water resources, The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports today.

"If our ancestors were willing to lay down their lives for this territory, certainly we can sacrifice the money, time and efforts for those who will live here in future generations," tribal environmental director Ken Fish told the paper.

The tribe plans to ask the Environmental Protection Agency for "treatment as state" (TAS) status. Tribes throughout the nation have been granted the designation under the Clean Water Act.

The Menominee Nation in fact asked for TAS status but withdrew its application after the state of Wisconsin filed suit in 1997. The dispute led to the indictment of two regional EPA officials and a guilty plea for one.
