Is the Crow Tribe of Montana moving towards a major leadership disaster? With three groups claiming authority, it looks that way.

The tribe installed new leaders, including Chairman Clifford Bird in Ground, in the summer of 2000. But a new constitution was approved, some say illegally, to extend their two-year terms into four-year terms.

Dissidents refuse to recognize the change and say the two-year limit still applies. But within this camp, there was a dispute over when the election would be held.

So there was one last month, with David Turns Plenty Sr. claming the title of chairman. Another will be held this Saturday.
