National endangered list expands

FRIDAY, JUNE 7, 2002 Sacred Native sites are getting national attention with the addition of two locations on the "most endangered" list of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The organization named the Missouri River, where burial grounds and ceremonial lands are being lost due to federal water management policies and drought, and Indian Pass in California, considered sacred to the Quechan Nation, to its list. The addition is representative of an expansion of the concept of preservation, the group said. The Trust has joined with the National Congress of American Indians and other tribal groups to highlight sacred site protection. Get the Story:
