A group of volunteers has undertaken an archaeological project aimed at mapping the Fetterman Fight, a December 21, 1866 battle in which Sioux, Cheyenne and Arapaho warriors defeated Army forces.

The Army, numbering about 50, was vastly outnumbered at Fort Phil Kearny. The tribal forces composed anywhere from 1,000 to 2,000.

The fort was built to protect settlers searching for gold. Along with two others, it was abandoned within three years after sustained attacks by tribal warriors.
