WEDNESDAY, JUNE 19, 2002 The Farmington Daily-Times in an editorial today criticizes those who deny a gang problem exists on the Navajo Nation in New Mexico. Singled out are Shiprock High School Principal Larry DeWees and Navajo Police Lt. Clarence Hawthorne. The paper said both are in denial if they believe gang activity doesn't occur in Shiprock. "Whether gang activity is already a problem in Shiprock or just the potential exists, this is no time for school officials, police or the people in the community to bury their heads in the sand and pretend nothing is happening," the paper writes.
