The joint federal-tribal trust reform task force updated Indian Country on Tuesday at the National Congress of American Indians.

The update was provided by NCAI President Tex Hall and Yurok (California) Chairwoman Sue Masten, who are the tribal co-chairs of the task force. The Department of Interior's co-chairs are Deputy Secretary J. Steven Griles ad Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb.

Associate Deputy Secretary Jim Cason filled in for Griles yesterday morning at the two-hour briefing.

Tribal leaders complained about the task force work. The most outspoken critic was Clifford Lyle Marshall, Chairman of the Hoopa Valley Tribe of California.

The update was given in advance of Secretary Gale Norton's consultation session. About 200 people attended the meeting last night in Bismarck, North Dakota.
