A casino-rich tribe is actively lobbying Congress to support the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository in Nevada.

The Mdewakanton Sioux Tribe has lived next door to a nuclear plant for several decades. The tribe's casino is within 600 yards of highly radioactive waste that would be sent to Nevada if Yucca Mountain is approved.

Tribes in Nevada and the region oppose the proposal to store up to 77,000 tons of waste. The site would be located on Shoshone land confirmed by an 1863 treaty.

The House voted to approve Yucca Mountain. The Senate has until July 25 to act.
