Peltier lawyer loses appeal

FRIDAY, JUNE 21, 2002

An attorney for imprisoned American Indian activist Leonard Peltier was turned away by the Supreme Court on Thursday in her quest to hold government officials accountable for withholding information.

Jennifer Harbury sought the right to sue officials who knew about her husband, a Guatemalan rebel, who was later killed. She had been told repeatedly that no information was available.

But the Court in a unanimous decision said Harbury didn't state what legal action she would have taken had she been told the truth. The Justices did not discuss that she was lied to, instead ruling on technical grounds.
