Calif. tribe seeks federal recognition

TUESDAY, JUNE 25, 2002 Rep. Mary Bono (R-Calif.) has introduced a bill to recognized the San Gabrieleno Band of Mission Indians of California. The tribe has applied for recognition through the Bureau of Indian Affairs. That process could take several years, depending on when all the evidence is submitted. An anti-casino group opposes the bill and claims the tribe only wants recognition for gaming. Bono's legislation would prevent the tribe from gaming. Get the Story:
