Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) told a Washington newspaper that he doesn't understand why using Indian names and symbols for fake ceremonies might be offensive.

I've never understood [the objection]," McCain told The Washington Times. "I know a lot of Native Americans who are proud that people take up their being 'braves' and things like that."

McCain was responding to an Agriculture Department investigation into the use of tribal names and symbols by a 4H club in West Virginia. The paper reported that a non-Indian initiated a civil rights complaint.

Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle (D-S.D.) told the paper: "I would think that [the use of Indian symbols] would allow the promotion of greater involvement."
