McCain holding up presidential nominees

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) has put a hold on all presidential nominees in order to force the White House to appoint a campaign finance regulator to the Federal Election Commission.

McCain wants to ensure Ellen Weintraub, who is supported by Democrats, is appointed during Congress' August recess. He will filibuster any other nominee until she is placed on the FEC.

McCain's insistence might impact an agreement Senate leaders reached with the White House to speed up President Bush's nominees. His delay mostly affects presidential boards and panels such as the National Indian Gaming Commission.
