Research published in today's issue of Nature documents the discovery of a 7 million-year-old skull, believed by researchers to be the oldest human ancestor ever found.

The nearly intact skull was found in northern Chad and has been dubbed Toumai, meaning "hope of life." Researchers believe it pushes the date of human-ape divergence back at least one million years.
