The Seattle Times in an editorial today praises a local school board for eliminating its Indian mascot.

"There is nothing honorable about the historic treatment of Native Americans in this country," the paper writes. "Nor is there honor in having children who attend sports events seeing signs that read "Scalp the Indians" and "Better Dead than Red." And if the people who are supposedly being honored don't feel honored, it is a good guess that they aren't."

The paper was reacting to the Seattle School Board's decision this week for banning a high school's "Indians" nickname.
