THURSDAY, JULY 18, 2002

First Nations leaders questioned a federal financial deal they said could lead to unwanted taxation of their communities.

At day two of the Assembly of First Nation's annual meeting, the First Nations Fiscal Institutions Initiative was discussed. It would allow bands to tax businesses located on reserve and opt to tax band members.

Former Finance Minister Paul Martin spoke at AFN yesterday and was received loudly for his statements affirming Native sovereignty. AFN Chief Matthew Coon Come said the official was merely pushing all the right buttons.
