FRIDAY, JULY 19, 2002

The Kansas grave site of Vice President Charles Curtis and his wife was re-dedicated at a ceremony on Thursday.

Curtis, a member of the Kanza, or Kaw, Nation, served under President Herbert Hoover from 1929 to 1933. He was also the first Native American in the U.S. Senate.

The Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation, the Sac and Fox Nation and numerous others provided money for the refurbishment project, which included new engravings on the headstone and other improvements.
