TUESDAY, JULY 23, 2002

Several Alaska Native organizations have asked Secretary of Interior Gale Norton to extend a comment period on the trans-Alaska oil pipeline.

The Tanana Chiefs Conference, the Alaska Federation of Natives and the Association of ANCSA Regional Corporation Presidents and CEOs Inc. said more time is needed because of the lengthy document on the pipeline rights of way. They also said the lack of technology and communication difficulties in Alaska require an extension.

The draft environmental impact statement was released July 5. The comment period, if left alone, runs 45 days.
