TUESDAY, JULY 23, 2002

A federal judge on Monday said he would decide within a week on a lawsuit filed by tribes and environmental groups.

The Yakama Nation of Washington and the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes of Idaho are fighting a proposed reclassification of nuclear waste. The Department of Energy proposed regulations that would allow highly radioactive waste to stay at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in Washington rather than move it to a federal dump.
