WEDNESDAY, JULY 24, 2002

The Senate Committee on Indian Affairs last week approved a bill to require a study of the effects of relocation on Navajo and Hopi communities in Arizona.

A law was passed in 1974 to settle a land dispute affecting the tribes. Navajo and Hopi tribal members were required to move in some instances.

The study requires the Department of Interior to spend a year analyzing the impacts of the relocation. A technical corrections bill contains the provision.
