Torture victims win $54.6 million suit

WEDNESDAY, JULY 24, 2002 A federal jury on Tuesday awarded $54.6 million to three victims of torture suffered at the hands of the El Salvador army. The defendants are two former generals whom the jury said were responsible for torture under a 1992 federal law. The men say they cannot pay the money. The three plaintiffs are a former college professor, a former church volunteer and a former surgeon. They were victims of the early 1980s civil war which left as many as 75,000 dead. Get the Story:
