WEDNESDAY, JULY 24, 2002 Arizona's newly drawn 1st Congressional district has a 19 percent Native American population, a factor which could tip the upcoming primaries and election. The field of candidates for the seat is large, with 13 Democrats and Republicans in the running for the September 10 primary. With a few exceptions, most are unrecognizable names, according to Congressional Quarterly. Derrick Watchman, a Navajo Nation chief of staff, seeks the Democrat nomination but trails in finances with $36,947 compared to Fred DuVal, a former Clinton White House aide who is backed by former Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt. Stephen Udall, of the Udall political family, is also running. Democrats are 44 percent of the registered votes compared to 36 percent Republican. Voters in this new district favored President Bush 50 percent to 45 percent. Get the Story:
