New salmon proposal difficult for tribes

THURSDAY, JULY 25, 2002 A new proposal to protect wild salmon supports tribal initiatives but still makes implementation difficult, according to the Columbia River Intertribal Fish Commission. Tribes want to bolster wild salmon with hatchery-raised fish. The National Marine Fisheries Service yesterday proposed reforms to allow such efforts. But the commission says the policy would still require tribes to prove hatchery fish won't hurt wild runs. Get the Story:
