Attempts to expand the amount of nuclear waste stored next to the Prairie Island Reservation in Minnesota are meeting resistance from the tribe.

Xcel Energy Inc., the operator of a nuclear plant, has agreed to limits. The tribe said it plans to stick by that agreement.

Xcel is one of several partners in a consortium that wants to send its waste to the Skull Valley Goshute Reservation in Utah. The plan is seeing opposition from the state and Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham.

The Prairie Island Tribe lobbied heavily for the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository in Nevada, which is supported by the Bush administration.
