The tribes on the Fort Belknap Reservation of Montana are suing to enforce cleanup of abandoned mines.

The tribes, joined by environmental groups, said the state's plan is not adequate. Several cyanide heaps won't be cleaned under a $29 million proposal.

The mining area is next to the reservation, which is home to the Assiniboine and Gros Ventre tribes. Sacred mountains that were once part of the tribal land base were destroyed for open pit gold mines and the tribes want the land returned.
